The third MSFW Designer Runway show, “Contemporary”, was the epitome of sharp sophistication. In contrast to the previous “Modern Love” show, the leafy garden was replaced with a white stage on which a human art installation was the star. Covered head-to-toe in white and wearing a pair of spectacular white wings, the moving artist set the tone beautifully for the contemporary designer fashion that was to come.
Manning Cartell’s modernist capsule made expert use of bold prints, textures, sheers and lace. The palette was one of crisp white and fresh blue tones. Livia Arena presented a collection of clean lines, tonal layers and introduced a play on texture and shine. A stand-out piece was their satin skirt with suspender detailing at the front. Alice McCall’s recognisable aesthetic was a picture of femininity and playfulness. The prints and two-tone designs made a statement, while her lace ensembles stole the show. Bec & Bridge sent monochromatic prints and simplistic, ever-flattering silhouettes down the runway. Their open-mesh looks are sure to spur a cult-following. LIFEwithBIRD’s collection flowed effortlessly, with bold stripes, black and white prints and textured suiting. They experimented with asymmetrical panelling and contrast trims superbly. Next up was Neo Dia, who breathed a whisper of colour onto the runway. The turquoise pieces popped against a palette of stark black and white, while their bold mesh and shine fabrications caught the eye. Lui Hon made waves with edgy attitude. His stylised head wear paid homage to nunnery head-dresses, a stark juxtaposition to his ultra-modern designs. One Fell Swoop was all about flowing fabrications and draping. Ginger & Smart’s linear prints, rose gold patterns and feathery masterpieces produced an eclectic, exquisite story as only Ginger & Smart know how to do. The finale was executed superbly with Yeojin Bae’s impeccable tailoring and fun use of pop colour.
There was not one collection we didn’t make mention of from tonight’s show. The contemporary designer fashion pieces from each collection are everything that we love. It was the perfect ending to another evening at MSFW.
