I recently caught up with Karen Millen Australia to discuss racewear fashion for this season and we had a lot of fun putting together four looks from their latest Spring Summer Collection. We wanted to create one look for each of the Melbourne Cup race days… Derby Day, Cup Day, Oaks Day and Stakes Day. We also collaborated with talented Melbourne milliner, Kerrie Stanley, who created some stunning head pieces made specially to compliment each outfit.
If you are an old hat at attending the races, you will know that Derby Day’s colours are black and white, which is perfect for what is currently trending. You could do an all white look with black accessories, as I have done here, or you could do something more classic with both black and white in one garment. Some bold stripes would be a great, modern way to do this also – perhaps a twin set.
Melbourne Cup Day is a public holiday in Melbourne, which tells you a little bit about how much Melbournites value this particular racing carnival. In terms of racewear fashion on Cup Day, I think classic and sophisticated is a good rule of thumb to follow. For this look I’ve gone for a gorgeous all-in-one black pant suit, keeping the accessories and headpiece black also.
Oaks Day is known as “Ladies Day”, so to me it feels right to go slightly more feminine on this day. I chose this stunning embellished shift dress and a classic nude pump. The beautiful head piece together with this dress creates a slightly mod 60’s vibe, which I love. Another thing to note is that pastels are still trending this Spring Summer, so definitely something to think about for the races.
Stakes Day, the last race day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, is also know as “Family Day”. It is typically more relaxed so you can afford to choose racewear fashion that is a little bit fun and flirty, such as this divine pleated shift dress. Apart from the stunning pleat work, which was love at first sight, I also chose this dress for Stakes Day because of the bright pop of colour. It keeps it fun and Summery, which is perfect because generally Stakes Day does tend to have amazing weather – although I don’t want to jinx it for this year!
